What is BuddyPress?
Liberty Fencing Club’s web site is equipped with a system called BuddyPress, which provides members and staff with many of the same features that are available in social media web sites like Facebook and Google Plus. Following are instructions on how to establish an account, manage your own activity stream, participate in groups and forums, communicate privately with other members, and do much more using BuddyPress. By the way, LFC has accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as well as an RSS feed. All of those accounts are accessible using the icons located at the top and the bottom of each page on our web site.
On each page of the LFC web site, there is a sidebar on the right that includes widgets for log in, search, recent posts, archives and news feeds. The log in widget looks like this:
If you already have an account, just enter your user name and password in the designated inputs, and click on the button labeled, “Log In”. If you do not have an account, click on the Register link. When you click on the Register link, you will see a page that accepts information about you, which appears as follows:
Most of the inputs are required. Please enter all of the information requested and click on the button labeled, “Complete Sign Up”.
The system will submit your request to our administrator for approval. Once approved, you will receive notification by email that you have access to your account. Then you will be able to log in using the widget as shown above.
When you log in, the system displays the LFC home page. The log in widget changes so that only your picture, your name, and a link to “Log Out” appear, such as the following:
You now have access to the members only section of the LFC web site, including activities, groups, forums, and a list of members. These features are accessible from the menu item labeled, “For Members”. To Log out, click on the “Log Out” link under your name.
There is also a menu of options available from the top of the page. Hover your mouse pointer of the “Howdy” message in the upper right corner of the page. The system will display a drop down menu:
As you can see, this menu provides access to many BuddyPress features.
After you log in, the log in widget presents your profile picture, your name, and the “Log Out” hyperlink. It is visible in the sidebar on the right side of each page, and looks like this:
To get access to your account, click on the picture or your name. The system will display a page that looks like this:
Since this is a new account, there is no activity displayed on the page. To post a new message, just start typing in the space below the text, “What’s new, Maya?” Of course, you will see your name in place of Maya’s. The widget will appear as follows:
You may type as much text as you wish, using the Enter key for separate lines. When you’re finished, just click on the “Post Update” button and Presto! Your new activity appears as follows:
Below the message are buttons for you to add comments, designate a favorite, or delete the post. Other members can add comments and designate your post as a favorite, also. Only you can delete it.
Suppose you would like to do more than just broadcast a text message. The system enables you to share a picture, a video, or a hyperlink. Just click one of the icons below the message text. For example, this is what the widget looks like if you click on the camera icon:
The system displays options to upload a file, add an image URL, or cancel the action. Let’s say the picture image is stored on your computer. Click on the first option. Just click on the icon that looks a little film strip. If there is something else you would like to share, click on the little chain link icon. From there, you can share a hyperlink to any content anywhere on the Internet.
You may have noticed that above the activity widget, there is a series of links and a drop-down menu like this:
These options enable you to select the posts you want to see. For example, if you just want to see posts where you are mentioned, click on “Mentions”. Likewise, you may click on “Favorites”, “Friends”, or Groups” to see favorite posts, posts from your friends, or posts from your groups, respectively. The drop-down menu on the right-hand side gives you even more options:
