Beginning on Wednesday, January 23, Margo Szabunia will teach epee classes and be available for private lessons at Liberty Fencing Club!

Margo is one of the pioneers of women's epee with very impressive results and a consistent USFA "A" rating in both foil and epee over a span of several decades.   She fenced under 3-time Olympian & Hall of Fame coach Dave Micahnik and Olympic Team coach and Hall of Famer Lajos Csiszar at the University of Pennsylvania.  After Penn, she continued to train with legendary epeeist and coach Iosif Vitebskiy.   She was an assistant coach at Temple University in the 1980s and attended Coaches College in Colorado Springs.  Margo also began coaching epee at Swarthmore College in 2012.  As a junior fencer, she trained at the New York Fencers Club and at a club in Poland ("Piast").  Margo has represented the United States in competing abroad (Mexico, Canada, England, France) --- most recently in 2008 as a member of the U.S. Veterans World Team in Limoges, France.

She is very personable and a lot of fun.  Margo is extremely excited to begin coaching at Liberty FC and work with fencers at a variety of experience levels.

Liberty Fencing Club is honored to be hosting the first stand-alone Army-Navy dual meet in decades!   The cadets from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, NY) will be fencing the midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD) on  April 21, 2012 at our new Warrington, Pennsylvania location!  Army and Navy will each fence the British Royal Marines in foil.

Army and Navy will each field full men's and women's fencing teams who will  compete separately in an NCAA dual meet format.  In that format, there  will be 9 bouts per gender per weapon (total 27 bouts per gender).  Each weapon squad (epee, sabre, foil) in each gender must win 5 of 9 bouts  to win; each gender team must win 14 of 27 bouts to win, and the team  with 28 or more total victories takes the overall combined men's/women's 6-weapon team crown.

The British Royal Marines will be a special guest and will field a foil squad to compete against the foil squads from Army & Navy.  Those matches will be in Olympic format, scored on a 45-touch relay.

The men's events are tentatively scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM and conclude at roughly 2:30 PM.  The women's events are scheduled to begin  immediately after the conclusion of the men's events.

This will be a great opportunity for people to see a collegiate fencing meet close to home and, most importantly, support the future leaders and  officers of our armed forces!

Some U.S. Olympians will be refereeing, including Ivan Lee (2004) and David Micahnik (1960, 1964, 1968; and US Fencing Hall of Fame).

Bob Campbell, a member of the Philly Pops and co-owner of IQnection (a local web design, marketing, and hosting company) will be performing the National Anthems of the United States and United Kingdom.

There is NO ENTRY FEE.  Admission is on a first come, first-served basis and is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
